CHAPTER FIFTEEN
LUCIAN WAS ABSOLUTELY certain that sex on a desk with Karlee didn’t qualify as shallow. However, it was about to become one of his biggest regrets. At least it would when the pleasure from the climax quit slamming through him.
Karlee was clearly experiencing some of those pleasure slams, too, because her eyes were glazed, and she had a dreamy but surprised look on her face.
“Did the earth just move?” she asked, and she sounded serious.
Lucian glanced down to find the cause. “No. The stack of folders shifted under your butt.”
She actually seemed a little relieved about that. Maybe that meant she was putting this all into perspective. Exactly what that perspective might be, he didn’t know yet, but when she’d wrapped her head around it, maybe she’d clue him in. For now, Lucian settled for getting off her so he could go into the small bathroom. He didn’t look for anything to use to hit himself on the head, though he probably should have.
Not hurting Karlee had been a high priority of his. Not just because of his relationship with Amelia but because of that whole fact about him sucking at relationships. She needed someone a lot better than him.
Lucian frowned.
Too bad he hadn’t had this pep talk with himself before he’d gotten her on that desk. Now she was probably out there either a) planning their future together or b) upset because she knew there was no future. Either way, he’d screwed her over while actually screwing her.
Lucian cleaned up, splashing some water on his face and trying to steel himself up for whatever he’d find when he went back into the office. But he hadn’t expected to see what he was seeing.
Karlee wasn’t alone.
There was a tall, dark-haired guy with her, and he was hugging her. Both of them were smiling as if there was something to smile and hug about.
“Oh,” Karlee said when she saw Lucian. It was as if she’d forgotten he was there. Well, that sure as hell didn’t do anything for his ego. “Lucian, this is Simon Metcalf. Simon, this is Lucian Granger.”
An awkward silence followed, and it got even more awkward when Simon thrust out his hand for Lucian to shake. “It’s good to meet you. I’m Karlee’s date.”
“I forgot to mention Simon when you came in,” Karlee mumbled.
Yeah, she had, but then, Lucian hadn’t given her much of a chance to say anything. He’d swooped right in and started kissing her. It would have been hard for her to talk with his tongue in her mouth.
“I understand Karlee used to work for you,” Simon went on. The man obviously didn’t know that Karlee and he had also just had sex.
Lucian settled for a nod and then turned to Karlee for some kind of explanation. Was she literally about to go on a date only minutes after having sex with him? If so, then it was obvious she wasn’t as upset about this as he’d thought she would be.
“I was just telling Simon that I need a rain check on our date.
